MARYAM

MBAYE

I direct films, shoot photos, edit visuals, and do a bit of graphic design when the mood hits. I also sketch for fun, because I can’t sit still.
They say I’m all over the place, but that’s kind of the point. Sometimes my work makes sense, sometimes it just looks nice, both are fine.
Inspired by people, places, and everything that feels real.

In Wolof, Tataan is the act of placing a basin under the rain and letting it fill, drop by drop. In the same way, this series looks at how women are shaped by what they receive, gestures, words, and ways of preparing themselves. In Senegalese culture, being well prepared is a form of pride. It is a language. A way of showing care for oneself and for others. This project is my way of holding onto what I grew up seeing, and honoring the women who taught me that preparation is also dignity.

The shape of silence is a quiet exploration of the body in its most instinctive movements, the ones we adopt when no one is watching. It’s an homage to solitude, stillness, and those forgotten postures that speak an inner truth.

This series questions what the body expresses freely, when it isn’t shaped by the expectations of the outside gaze.
